‘Should I Step Down As Head of Twitter?’

  • Elon Musk on Sunday polled his followers, asking if he should step down as the head of Twitter.
  • “I will abide by the results,” Musk wrote, and shortly after posting, the poll was in favor of him leaving.
  • Twitter has faced ongoing controversy since the billionaire’s acquisition in October.

Amid ongoing controversies and concerns from advertisers, Elon Musk on Sunday asked his followers if he should step down as the head of Twitter.

“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” Musk wrote.

It is unclear who might replace Musk or when he might step down, should he resign as head of the company.

Within 30 minutes of posting, the poll had received more than two million votes with the results slightly favoring Musk stepping down. At the time of publication, 56.7% of respondents voted ‘yes’ to Musk’s question.

In a separate tweet after creating the poll, Musk posted: “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

Since taking over the social platform, Musk has made multiple policy decisions via the results of user polls — including whether to unsuspend the account of former President Donald Trump and other users banned under the previous leadership, and reinstate accounts of journalists who he said “doxxed” him by reporting on the location of his private jet.

Twitter has faced continued criticism, rising hate speech, an exodus of influential users and advertisers, and threats of international sanctions since Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition in October.

Musk and representatives for Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
