Several aides and advisers to President Joe Biden are cautiously optimistic that former President Donald Trump’s decision to run in 2024 could help secure their boss a second term, according to Reuters.
Speaking anonymously, the aides and advisers shared their thoughts on Trump’s decision to jump into the race early with Reuters.
Trump announced that he seeks to run for a third time on Tuesday night, pledging to “fight like no one who has ever fought before” until Election Day 2024. The announcement followed the midterms when a slew of Trump-approved candidates failed to make an electoral breakthrough.
Reuters reported that Biden, who defeated Trump in the last presidential election, was asked at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, if he had a reaction to his predecessor running again. “Not really,” Biden responded.
According to Reuters, his aides and advisers have described Trump as a politician whose star has faded.
They also characterized the former president as somebody who drives Democrats to the polls and could help Biden, should he choose to run, win the next presidential election.
The aides and advisers also painted Trump as a threat to democracy, referring to his repeated baseless claims of election fraud which motivated the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
“Trump is definitely the most vulnerable of the candidates, but he does come with a cost the White House is keenly aware of,” said a top Democrat who works with the White House, per Reuters.
Those interviewed by Reuters expressed concern about the impact of a vicious campaign and warned of Trump’s political resilience. One Biden adviser noted that Trump has been written off before but has, in the past, seemingly managed to bounce back stronger, Reuters reported.
In March, Biden said he’d be “very fortunate” to run against Trump again. In 2020, Biden won the popular vote and was victorious by a margin of 206 to 232 in the Electoral College.
