Claer Barrett, the FT’s consumer editor, has been named best VCT journalist at the annual Association of Investment Companies awards in London.
Her article “How much investment risk would you take to reduce your tax bill?” analysed record inflows into venture capital trusts in the last tax year, and the substantial tax breaks on offer.
Responding to FT readers’ concerns that overstretched company valuations could hamper future returns, she also questioned why VCT managers’ ongoing charges were not falling when the value of assets under management was rapidly rising.
“Claer is a very experienced journalist whose work on VCTs has educated and enlightened readers on their benefits and risks,” said Annabel Brodie-Smith, communications director at the AIC. “In the words of one judge, she is rightfully recognised for her excellent in-depth articles on VCTs.”
